The 11 sectors of the US market

Did you know that every company on the US stock market is grouped into 11 economic sectors (the GICS standard)? Each sector bundles companies with similar businesses — from technology and health care to energy and real estate. The table below shows how much each sector is worth (total market cap) and how it moved over the past day, week and month, so you can quickly see where money is flowing in the market.

Each sector’s change is market-cap weighted (larger companies count more) and computed across the S&P 500 constituents.

How to read the map

  • Rectangle size = the company’s market capitalization (its total value). Large companies take up more space.
  • Color = price change over the selected period: green for a gain, red for a loss, grey for missing data. The more intense the color, the bigger the move (up to ±3%).
  • Companies are grouped by sector and industry so you can quickly see where the market is moving — for example whether technology is up while energy is down.

About this data

Market data updates twice a day (not real time), not instantly. Changes are computed from closing prices.

We cover the largest US companies (S&P 500, Dow 30, Nasdaq 100). European and small-cap names are not included yet.

This information is educational and is not investment advice. Investing in equities carries risk.

Frequently asked questions

What is a stock heat map?
It is a visual where each company is a rectangle: the size shows its market cap, and the color shows how much its price rose or fell. It lets you read the whole market at a glance.
What do the size and color mean?
Size reflects market capitalization (large companies are bigger on the map). Color reflects price change: green = gain, red = loss, grey = data unavailable.
How often is the data updated?
Twice a day (shortly after the US market opens and after it closes). It is not a real-time source — it is meant for a daily overview, not intraday trading.
Can I choose a different index or period?
Yes. Use the buttons at the top to switch between S&P 500, Dow 30 and Nasdaq 100, and between the 1-day, 1-week or 1-month change.
Where does the data come from?
Prices and market caps come from public market-data sources, while the company lists and sectors come from the official indices (S&P 500, Dow Jones, Nasdaq-100).
