Swissquote

Swissquote

A licensed Swiss bank, founded in 1996 and holding a banking licence since 2001, headquartered in Gland, with the group listed on the Swiss stock exchange. It offers stock market investing, CFD trading, exchange-listed options and futures — and, unlike an ordinary brokerage company, a bank account with a personal IBAN.

Chapter 01

Introducing the company

Swissquote started out in 1996 as a financial information platform and became the pioneer of online trading in Switzerland. Since 2000 the group has been listed on the Swiss stock exchange under the SQN ticker, and since 2001 it has held a full banking licence — which means audited financial reports, published regularly. Today it is the largest online bank in Switzerland, with 76.3 billion francs in client assets and 650,089 accounts at the end of 2024. It covers four directions: stock market investing (spot) with real ownership of the shares, trading through contracts for difference (CFDs — over-the-counter (OTC) instruments through which you trade the price difference without owning the asset), exchange-listed options and futures contracts.

The company is still led by one of its founders, has over a thousand employees and offices in Zurich, Luxembourg, London, Dubai, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malta, Cyprus and South Africa. Since 2022 it has had a technology centre in Bucharest — part of the platforms you will be using is developed in Romania. It is an official sponsor of the UEFA Europa League and UEFA Conference League.

How the company earns

Hybrid model

A licensed bank — not just a brokerage company: it executes orders, holds securities in custody and takes deposits. On the trading account it is your counterparty and quotes the price, and the cost is included in the spread, with no separate commission. Part of its revenue comes from here. Add the interest on positions held overnight, the inactivity fee on the trading accounts and the custody fee on the investing direction. Being a bank, it also earns from the exchange-rate difference on currency conversion, from the interest of banking activity proper and from account administration fees. On the investing side it also collects a distribution fee from fund managers — that is, a share of their annual management fee, paid to whoever brings them clients — its revenue does not depend only on your trading, which is a real argument for stability. The model is legal and supervised by the authorities that granted the licences; it is described in the execution policy and in the pricing brochure — the links are in Regulation and the safety of your money ›. What each execution model means, we explained in the guide What a broker is ›.

What sets it apart

It is a licensed bank, not a brokerage company — you get a bank account with a personal IBAN, your cash comes under the Swiss deposit guarantee scheme, and your securities sit in custody in your name. It matters if you want your money held not by an intermediary firm but by a supervised banking institution.

The group is listed on the stock exchange and has no offshore entity — its figures are public and audited, and all its entities are authorised in tier 1 or tier 2 jurisdictions. It matters if you want to check for yourself, from independent sources, how solid the institution you keep your money with really is.

Banking services and additional services

These are not protections for your money, but commercial services, with their own rules and their own risk.

Lombard credit, secured by your portfolio

You can borrow money by pledging your own securities, without selling them — a classic private-bank instrument, here at online-bank costs. Used with discipline, by experienced investors, it keeps your long-term positions in place and gives you liquidity. Used wrongly, it amplifies losses — talk to us first, to find out how and how much you can get and how to use it.

Income from the securities you hold

You can authorise the bank to lend the securities in your portfolio to third parties, receiving in exchange a share of the fee it collects. The authorisation covers, by default, the whole portfolio, and the contract has conditions worth reading before you sign. You can exit at any time. We explain the mechanism to you beforehand — and if you have a long-term investment portfolio, we discuss whether it is worth it.

The framework for asset managers

The bank does not offer managed accounts of the "hand over the money and we take care of it" kind. Instead, it officially works with independent asset managers, to whom it provides custody and execution: a contract, a power of attorney limited to trading — the money stays in the client's account — and reporting. If you want to manage portfolios, we explain what you need and assist you through the official procedure.

Transaction packages at a fixed commission

If you make many operations per year, you can buy, directly from your account, a package of transactions at a fixed price, valid for twelve months: from 39 CHF per trade on the small package, down to 19 CHF on the large one. It applies on most major markets, and on some exchanges outside Switzerland a fixed adjustment is added. Compared with the standard grid, where a large trade can reach 190 CHF, the difference is considerable for an active investor.

Interest on the cash in your account

On the trading account, the interest on cash balances is 0% for all currencies and all tiers, according to the official pricing brochure. Interest is obtained through the bank's separate savings solution or through term deposits, which have their own entry threshold.

Transfer of securities

You can move existing securities to or from other custodians. Deliveries of securities outside the bank have a cost per position, and physical delivery is significantly more expensive — the exact amounts are in the official pricing brochure. Ordinary corporate actions are free.

Chapter 02

Regulation and the safety of your money

The Swissquote group operates authorised entities in nine jurisdictions and has no offshore entity. That is why there are no “global licences” here for clients outside the European Union: clients from the Republic of Moldova register directly on the company's main licence, the one supervised by FINMA — the Swiss financial market supervisory authority, a tier-1 regulation. You are, therefore, the client of a bank licensed in Switzerland, not of an entity registered in a permissive jurisdiction. Below are all the group's authorisations, each one verifiable by you in the authority's public register.

Not all authorities issue licence numbers: banking authorities and some market authorities enter the institution in a public register that is searchable by name, and in that case the column shows the type of authorisation. All the links lead to the official registers, where you can check for yourself.

How client money is protected

The protections below depend on the rules of each entity and we explain them at length, for all our partners, in the guides of the Brokers section; here — briefly, for orientation:

  • Segregation of fundsSegregation of funds — client money sits in bank accounts separate from the company's money. The company cannot use it for its own expenses, and the bank where it is held cannot set it off against the company's debts. There is a particularity here that changes the conversation: the institution you keep your money with is itself a licensed bank, with its own capital and liquidity requirements, supervised as such, and the securities you buy sit in custody in your name.

  • Negative balance protectionNegative balance protection — careful, it does not exist here. We call things by their name, because it matters: the special conditions for Forex and CFDs of the global licence do not guarantee that the most you can lose is the money you deposited. The bank has an automatic position liquidation system, but the contractual text specifies that the system operates for the bank's benefit, that there is no guarantee it triggers in time and that the loss can exceed the deposited margin. The same text says that the responsibility for limiting your losses is yours. At the European Union entity, the protection is imposed by regulation for non-professional investors — on the global licences, it is not. The practical conclusion: on this direction, use stop-loss orders and position sizes you can sustain. Risk management ›

  • Compensation schemeCompensation scheme — the protection for the extreme case: if the institution went bankrupt or could no longer honour its obligations to clients, a fund returns the money, up to a ceiling. It does not cover trading losses, nor a drop in the value of your investments — only the failure of the institution. Since this is a banking licence supervised by FINMA, the Swiss deposit guarantee regime applies: cash is protected up to 100,000 CHF per client. The securities you bought do not enter the bankruptcy estate — they are yours, held in separate custody. What a compensation fund is, we explained in the Glossary ›. We have explained what a compensation fund is in the Glossary.

Chapter 03

CFD trading

Contracts for difference on currencies, indices, commodities, bonds and shares, on an account separate from the investing one. You do not buy the real assets — you trade the price difference, with leverage and in both directions of the market. The bank is your counterparty and quotes the price, and the cost is included in the spread.

The tables below show the main conditions. The button adds the detailed rows — technical specifications, useful if you already know what you are looking for.

General conditions

Asset classescurrencies, indices, commodities, bonds and shares — all as CFDs, that is, without owning the asset
Number of assetsdozens of currency pairs and hundreds of CFDs on the other classes
Order executionhybrid model: the bank combines dealing on its own account with routing to a network of banks and liquidity providers. All-in spread, no separate commission on most instruments, and the trading servers are hosted near the financial centres, to reduce latency. The bank officially publishes its average execution speed and its fill rate — one of the few that do. The special conditions are explicit and worth reading: the bank is your only counterparty, the trades do not go through a regulated market, the bank is not obliged to offer you the best price, nor to quote permanently, orders are executed on a "best efforts" basis — so price slippage can occur — and the bank's interest in a trade is opposite to yours. These are normal things for this model, but it is fair to know them beforehand; the documents are in Regulation and the safety of your money ›
Order typesFULL SPEC SHEETmarket, limit, stop, conditional orders of the "one cancels the other" and "executed then triggers" type. No guaranteed execution: when triggered, the order is executed at the next available price, which can be significantly worse than the one you wanted
Platform time zoneFULL SPEC SHEETthe bank's documents use Central European Time (CET): overnight position rollover happens at 23:00 CET, and on Wednesdays a triple swap applies, to cover the weekend. The clock in MetaTrader can show a different time from the one on your phone — check it in the "Market Watch" window before scheduling orders or robots
Maximum leverage1:100, standard for non-professional clients. For clients with professional client status, the bank officially offers higher leverage — we know exactly how much is possible, what the criteria are and how the procedure goes. Leverage amplifies both the gain and the loss: Risk management ›
Margin call / stop-outFULL SPEC SHEETmaintenance margin 100% · stop-out when the margin level falls below 30%: the positions with the biggest loss are liquidated first, regardless of their size, until the level returns to 30% or more
Swapapplied per instrument, at 23:00 CET; on Wednesdays it is charged triple, to cover the weekend. The rates are published on the bank's trading conditions page
Inactivity fee10 units of the account currency per month, after 6 months without positions or trades, and only on the trading accounts — the investing account has no such thing. Worth knowing about, although, if you come to trade rather than to park money, you will never meet it: a single trade before the deadline cancels it
Demo accountavailable, with a limited duration — requested separately from the real account
Account without overnight interest (Islamic)on request, through the bank's support — it does not appear automatically, you request it at opening
Currency conversioncash exchanges between your account currencies carry a percentage cost, published in the pricing brochure; the account is multi-currency, so you can avoid conversions by holding the currency you trade in
Deposits and withdrawalsfunding by bank transfer costs nothing at the bank; withdrawals carry a fixed fee per currency, and cards issued in Europe carry a funding fee — details in Deposits and withdrawals ›

The upper tier: above the Prime account threshold, the bank works with personalised conditions, set according to volume. We go through the details together at the consultation.

An observation about the risk figure. The percentage published by the company, 68.22%, is below the range of the standardised ESMA (EU) warnings, 74–89% — and that even though the bank's metric is stricter than the European template: it counts both the full loss of the margin and the negative balance. Our structural interpretation: leverage capped at 1:100, a higher entry threshold and the orientation towards investing attract better-capitalised, better-prepared clients. The figure does not promise a win — the majority of non-professional (retail) clients trading CFDs still lose. If you are at the beginning, start with education ›, not with a deposit.

Chapter 04

Options trading

Traded through the same eTrading account as the investments, not through a separate one. Exchange-listed options, on shares and on indices — contracts that give the right, not the obligation, to buy or sell at a set price, until a set date. The buyer's risk is limited to the premium paid; the seller's is not. They are exchange derivatives, not contracts concluded with the bank, and access goes through the investing account. You will find every term explained in the Glossary ›.

Also through the eTrading account. Exchange-listed futures contracts: you commit to buy or sell an asset at a set date and a set price. Chapter 06

Stock market investing (spot)

The flagship direction of this partner and the main reason we recommend it: you buy shares and exchange-traded funds (ETFs) with real ownership — the assets are registered in your name, in separate custody; you are not just trading the price difference. You have access to dozens of exchanges and millions of instruments, and the account comes with a personal Swiss IBAN. It is one of the bank's two accounts — the eTrading account — so no comparison matrix:

General conditions

Commission on the Swiss exchangein value tiers, from 3 CHF for small orders up to 190 CHF for very large ones
Selected ETFsa flat commission tiered by order size: 3, 5 or 9 CHF — the smaller the order, the lower the tier
Custodyin fixed tiers: 20 CHF per quarter up to 50,000 in assets, then 25 and 37.50, capped at 50 CHF per quarter. Above one million a small percentage is added for external safekeeping
Swiss stamp duty0.075% for Swiss securities and 0.15% for foreign ones, per transaction — it is a state tax, not the bank's
Available exchangesdozens of exchanges, including SIX, Xetra, Euronext, the US exchanges, London, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Singapore, Australia and Canada
The full fee grid, per exchange, is in the official pricing brochure — we offer it to you any time on request, or you can find it on the bank's website. Dividends are credited to the account. The risk remains real: share prices can fall, and past results do not guarantee the future. The risk figure at the top of the page does not refer to this direction — it concerns only the CFDs.

Chapter 07

Platforms and tools

The bank has two accounts, no more: the eTrading account, through which you do investing, options and futures, and the Forex account, for CFDs. Each has its own platforms — and it is good to know from the start which is which.

Chapter 08

Deposits and withdrawals

The rules follow the standards of the field: money comes in and goes out only through cards or bank accounts opened in your name (an anti-money-laundering rule). Below you have the conditions for transactions with bank accounts from Moldova.

MethodDeposit / durationWithdrawal / durationKeep in mind
SEPA transfer (EUR)0% · 1 business day2 € · 1 business dayMoldova has been in the SEPA zone since 6 October 2025, so a euro transfer is charged at the SEPA rate, not SWIFT — the channel we recommend
SWIFT transfer, other currencies0% · 1–3 business days$10 or 2 CHF with shared charges · 25 if you choose to cover all the costs yourself, including the intermediary banks' · 1–3 business daysyour bank may add its own fee
Visa / Mastercard card1.9% for cards issued in Europe · instantafter Moldova joined SEPA, Moldovan cards moved from the 'rest of the world' category, where funding was free, into the 'Europe' category · for large amounts, a transfer remains the better deal
E-walletsnot accepted — it is a bank, not a typical brokerage company

How a withdrawal is made

Withdrawal requests are processed, after the account has been verified, usually much faster than the official deadlines indicate. The withdrawal first returns to the method used for the deposit; the profit can go out to a bank account or another method, but strictly in your name.

These are not obstacles — they are exactly the rules that make the difference between a financial institution and a scam.

Note for Moldova — read before you deposit

Some banks in the country may delay or even reject transfers to brokerage companies. The reason is not you: the stock market field is only now coming under local regulation (Law 177/2025), and the banks, faced with the wave of frauds in which criminals pose as “brokers” or “investment firms”, still do not have clear procedures for telling a regulated brokerage company apart from a scam. In developed countries, stock market investing is integrated directly into online banking; here, the banks are only just learning that a regulated brokerage company is, like them, a supervised financial institution. The good news: if you understand what you are doing and can explain to the bank where the money is going — your own trading account, with a regulated company, verifiable in public registers — the situation is usually cleared up quickly. You have the same support for withdrawals: if the bank asks about the origin of the money, trading and stock market investing are legal activities, and our partner companies issue official activity reports (account statements) precisely for this kind of transparency.

If you run into a refusal, contact us.

Your bank may charge its own conversion or currency transfer fee — check its tariffs before your first deposit, and if you want, we will work out the cheapest route together, free of charge.

The complaints procedure

Before anything else, tell us what happened and we will try to help: most of the time the trouble comes from some services and procedures not being known well enough. And if the complaint really is necessary, we help you word it correctly — it is part of our support. The bank's documents are precise, and the deadlines matter — and there are two of them, very different. For the Forex and CFD trading account, any complaint about the execution or non-execution of an order must be made in writing immediately, but no later than one business day from receiving the confirmation. For the bank's reports and statements in general, the deadline is 30 days from receipt, by letter to the head office in Gland. After these deadlines, the operation or the report is considered approved, and the right to contest it is lost. That is why you check your confirmations the day you receive them, not at the end of the month. Keep the correspondence; if the answer does not satisfy you, you can turn to the authority supervising the licence your account was opened on — the contact details are in the bank's documents.

Chapter 10

The Trading.md advantage

Terms we negotiated with this partner

where we have obtained trading conditions better than the public ones, they apply automatically to accounts opened through our links. Ask us which conditions are active right now for this partner.

You do not trade through us. The account is opened directly with the company, in your name, with the same conditions you would have if you went to their website on your own. The difference is that, in addition to those conditions, you also have us alongside you.

The contracts of many brokerage companies allow the intermediary to add a cost of its own on top of the spread. We never use that possibility. And where terms can be negotiated, we obtain for our clients better conditions than the public ones — even when that reduces our earnings.

Local support, in Romanian and Russian

Free consultations for any procedure

Opening the account, preparing the documents, the first deposit, a withdrawal that is delayed, a complaint. We charge nothing for this.

You choose in full knowledge of the facts

We also put on the table what does not suit. A client who discovers these things on their own after depositing does not come back.

The consultation is free and does not commit you to anything. Schedule a discussion.

Chapter 11

How to open the account, step by step

Six steps, in their natural order — and if you get stuck somewhere, ask us for help, it is free.

  1. Open the registration form

Through the button on this page, so that the registration is linked to us and you receive the support and the conditions of Trading.md clients.

  2. Fill in your personal details

Name, country, e-mail, phone — exactly as they appear in your identity document. One different letter delays the verification.

  3. Answer the experience questionnaire

Questions about income, savings and your experience with leveraged instruments. Answer honestly: the questionnaire establishes what can be offered to you.

  4. Upload the documents

The identity document and the proof of address, in the Client Cabinet. Clear photographs, the corners visible, the document within its validity period.

  5. Create the trading account

You choose the platform, the account type, the currency and the leverage. You can change them later by opening a new account — you are not locked into your first choice.

  6. Fund the account and get started

You deposit through one of the accepted methods, in your name. Our recommendation: start on a demo, in parallel, until you understand the platform.

Account verification

In principle, all brokers ask for the same thing: that you prove who you are and where you live. The details differ — which documents they accept, from which institutions, in what format and how long it takes.

Which documents and how many

Two, as a rule: one that confirms your identity and one that confirms your address. They must be within their validity period and legible in full.

Who issues the accepted document

Not every piece of paper with your address on it is accepted. The accepted issuing institutions differ from one company to another, and for Moldova not all the variants work the same way.

Selfie, video or just an upload

At some companies it is enough to upload the files. At others a photograph with the document in your hand or a short video verification is needed.

How long it takes and what a refusal means

From a few minutes to a few weeks, depending on how clear the documents are. A refusal does not close the door: it usually means that additional or clearer documents are required.

You don't have to remember them all. We have been cooperating with each partner for years and know their requirements well, so we tell you from the start exactly what to prepare — and if you want, we stay by your side all the way. And if you have already tried somewhere and the verification did not pass, bring us your case: most of the time it gets resolved, with the final decision remaining, of course, with the company. We go through verification together, free of charge ›

Conclusion: who it suits

It suits

For those who put the safety of the institution first: a licensed Swiss bank, with a personal IBAN, custody in your name, zero offshore entities and a group listed on the stock exchange, with audited figures. And for those who want real investing across dozens of exchanges, not just CFDs, or appreciate execution that is measured and published openly.

To weigh up

The entry thresholds are high and the spreads are above the industry average — it is not the right choice if your priority is the minimum cost per trade. Leverage is capped at 1:100 for ordinary clients, and on the CFD direction you have no guarantee that the loss stops at the money you deposited — which demands discipline in sizing your positions. Custody and the Swiss stamp duty add to the cost of investing. Funding by card from Moldova currently costs 1.9%.

Disclaimer

CFDs and options are complex instruments, with leverage, and involve a high risk of losing money rapidly. Before you trade, make sure you understand how they work and that you can afford the risk of losing the amount invested.
