What the Forex heat map is

The Forex heat map shows, in a single table, how the 8 major currencies moved against one another. Each cell is a currency pair: the row currency is the base currency and the column currency is the quote currency. Green shows that the base currency strengthened over the selected period, and red shows that it weakened. The more intense the color, the larger the move.

How to interpret currency strength

Read a horizontal row to see how one currency performs against the other 7. If every cell in the EUR row is green, the euro is strong in that period. If half are green and half are red, the move belongs to individual pairs, not to the euro as a whole.

How to use the map in your analysis

The map shows which currencies strengthened and which weakened over the selected period. Traders use it at the start of their analysis, to see quickly where the currency market has moved and which pairs are worth studying on the chart and in the economic calendar. The map describes the recent past and does not indicate the future direction of the price. To avoid doubling your exposure to currencies that move together, check Asset correlation. For position size, use the FX calculators, and for loss limits, read about risk management.

Frequently asked questions

How often is the data updated?
The data is updated automatically, at regular intervals. The time of the last update appears above the map. Outside trading hours, the map shows the last available values.
What does a cell color mean?
Green means the row currency strengthened against the column currency during the selected period. Red means it weakened. Color intensity is proportional to the size of the move.
Why are some cells empty?
The cells on the diagonal are empty because a currency is not compared with itself. The gray cells are the pairs you removed from the filter.
Can I add precious metals or cryptocurrencies?
Gold (XAU), silver (XAG), palladium (XPD) and platinum (XPT) can be added from the filter and appear in a separate card below the map. Cryptocurrencies are not included.
Does the map tell me what to buy or sell?
No. The map shows how much currencies moved over a past period. It is not a trading signal and does not indicate the future direction of the price. Decisions are made on the basis of your own analysis and a trading plan.
