Solana Saga – a new type of mobile phone set to launch in 2023

Solana and its associated blockchain network, together with OSOM, are launching the first crypto smartphone - a mobile phone based on cryptocurrencies and the new generation of Web3 applications.

The announcement took place earlier, on June 23, in New York, where Solana revealed plans to launch this flagship mobile phone with its own set of features and capabilities.

The smartphone also comes with built-in integration into the Solana blockchain.

What is Solana Saga?

Solana Saga is a new mobile phone created by Solana in collaboration with Osom, an Android development company that created hardware for companies such as Google, Apple and Intel.

Google Cloud announced on November 5 that it had decided to establish itself as a Solana validator. The partnership between Google and Solana is about making blockchain accessible to everyone. 

Solana described its phone as a "premium hardware experience" and a "flagship-quality Android device designed specifically for crypto".

Jason Keats, CEO of Osom, said:

Saga starts from first principles to create a mobile experience for individuals, developers and ecosystem participants, opening a new era of mobility. The world needs new hardware to embrace the future that is web3, and building an ecosystem that looks to the future without being burdened by legacy ecosystems from the past is extremely exciting for us.

Alongside Solana Mobile, the blockchain also announced the launch of the Solana Mobile Stack software ecosystem for Android.

In an unprecedented turn of events, the company that previously had plans to develop Osom OV1 has now abandoned that project to focus exclusively on developing Solana Saga.

Solana Saga Features

Many of Solana Saga's features are provided by the Solana Mobile Stack software, called SMS.

This SDK will include Seed Vault for private keys, Solana Pay for Android and Solana dApp Store.

According to Solana, SMS and Solana dApp Store will allow developers to create a new Saga experience. These include: creating NFTs anywhere and on mobile, Web3 gaming on mobile, improved trading and much more.

In addition to the core blockchain features, the phone will also have a stainless steel body along with other Web3 features.

What is Web3?

The internet has progressed rapidly from the early days of Web1, which included static text and images, to the current version – Web2. We are now entering the Web3 era, where value and data will move easily across decentralized platforms with distributed ownership and control.

The first generation of web applications allowed users to read content, while the second generation gave us more interaction in reading and writing. Web3, as the third generation, can allow users to read, write, produce and own the content they contribute.

Web 3.0 is the latest and most discussed generation of the internet. After 2.0, the third iteration, based on sophisticated software programs such as artificial intelligence, will enter the arena of competitors. It aims to provide a trusted, data-driven user interface that addresses every user. Blockchains, the metaverse and the semantic Web are all expected to be leveraged through Web3.

Solana Saga price and launch date

Solana has not revealed the official and firm date of this launch, but as such, it could be launched anytime from January 2023 to June 2023.

Solana Saga will initially be available only in the USA, Canada, the EU and the UK.

The Solana Saga mobile will cost 1000 USD at launch. This includes a refundable initial deposit of 100 USD when pre-ordered.

As for payment coins, it seems that Solana will initially accept only the USDC stablecoin as payment. Later, we may also see other accepted cryptocurrencies - such as Solana.
